Having the kitchen in the open-plan living space may dissuade you from experimenting with anything pungent, but at least you can keep the designated cook company as they prepare dinner. From your doorstep, you're just a short stroll from historic sites, restaurants and bars, while the River Leie is only five minutes away.

The Artistic

This elegant home in the quiet Belgium town of Oudenburg exudes rustic charm and calm. Welcoming up to eight adults and six children, this house is ideal for families or groups of friends seeking a rural retreat amid blissful surroundings. Wander along pretty canals, ride bikes through the Flanders fields, or take a 10-minute drive down to sandy Bredene beach for a fun day of sand, sea, and surf. Inside, the interior blends minimalist mid-century furnishings, simple wooden tables, and exposed wood beams with sophisticated sofas, ornate antiques and rustic open-hearth fireplace features that creates a soothing and homely ambience. Dine together in the open-plan kitchen and dining area, that comes with sleek white surfaces, high spec appliances, and smooth black breakfast stools and chairs. Glass doors beckon you out to the beautifully well-kept garden with benches, sun loungers, and a pristine heated pool. When you're not bathing in the back garden, make the most of the coastal village of Oudenburg on your doorstep – the area is steeped in Roman history, benefitting from an array of public parks and golden sand beaches.

Quaint Tranquility

This stunning home looks like something out of a fairytale. With plenty of space for groups of up to 22 people, and a fabulous selection of amenities, you can live the high life in a spectacular setting. 

You'll be enchanted by this mansion house at first glance, thanks to its gable roof and pretty windows. The interior is handsome, with high ceilings, velvet sofas, and marble flooring that will make you feel like a prince or princess. There's plenty of space both inside and out for lavish feasts together, served at a long dining table. And, there's also a real focus on relaxation here – sink into the hot tub, sweat out your stresses in the sauna, or catch some rays on a lounger while the kids have fun in the garden. 

From here, you can pop over to Eifel National Park, near the border with Germany, for a hike or a cycle through the pretty landscapes. The town of Spa is also close by, where you can immerse yourself in the wellness culture and mineral-rich waters. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can take a drive over to visit the city of Liege, with its rich medieval history. 

Belgian Chocolate Box

A thirty-minute drive away from the longest underground river in the world, this home isn’t just desirable for its close proximity to the subterranean caves of Remouchamps. No, this home is a wonder unto itself. Sprawling three floors, the rooms are all tasteful and crisp, and most have views of the gorgeous foliage right on your doorstep. Explore every nook and cranny of this home to find the space that calls to you most, and claim it with a good murder mystery in one hand and a cup of freshly-brewed coffee in the other. Open the windows to listen to the soft whisper of nature all around as you hunker down, or get closer to the action by laying out a picnic blanket next to the water and catching up on your favourite podcast there. 

When you need a touch of self-care, you can take advantage of the outdoor wellness area, which includes a little hobbit-hole of a sauna and a matching hot tub. Hike the area, simply breathing in the clean air and the aroma of fresh soil as you listen to the chirping birds who call the trees home. 

You might not want to leave, but if you’re in desperate need of supplies, you can find the shops, and a wonderful array of restaurants, in the town of Liege – a forty-eight minute trip by car. By the way, there’s also a karaoke bar a six-minute walk away, but we’ll leave you to do with that information what you will. 

By The Waterside

France doesn’t have the monopoly on castles stays. This chateau in the cute Belgian village of Aywaille sits on the banks of the River Amblève. It enjoys a secluded spot, surrounded by nature and yet is just a short amble to the centre of Aywaille for cafés, restaurants and shops. 

With green wooden shutters and a stone tower, it’s the epitome of a lowlands castle. Inside, it’s divided into seven separate apartments, each with its own living room, dining area and kitchen, so this place would suit a big group that enjoys a sense of personal privacy. Wood-beamed ceilings and flagstone floors in the living rooms create a sense of the old world and the entire building is dotted with old marble fireplaces and spiral staircases.

Group gatherings can take place outside where there are loungers and space to dine on the lawn. The gravel patio with its wood-fired barbecue is the perfect spot for group meals if the weather is fine. It’s decked out like a beer garden with parasol-covered tables and chairs.  

Tower Castle

From chilly dips in the Black Sea and lying on De Haan beach to playing golf at the nearby course, this home is close to some great summer activities. It's a small space – best suited for small families or a group of close friends – with an open-plan living space to play card games, rustle up light meals, or curl up with a book on the sofa. Ocean-inspired trinkets decorate walls, from a fishing net and wooden carvings to boat prints. Bedrooms are both filled with daylight from the French doors, wake up and head out to the terrace for an alfresco cup of coffee before exploring the area. The flat is in an excellent position to explore Belgium, while incorporating in a seaside holiday, with Bruges 30 minutes by car, and art-filled Ostend just 15.

Sea Urchins

If you’re looking for a place to unwind and reconnect with nature, then this abode in the Belgian countryside is just the ticket. Situated in a pedestrianised holiday park, mornings are quiet and relaxed. Start the day with a light breakfast on the terrace before finishing the last of your coffee in the comfy living space – we loved the neutral tones, soft leather sofa and abundance of timber.  

When you’re ready to explore, hire a couple of mountain bikes and cycle through the surrounding woodland or take the short drive over to the Bosland Nature Reserve for a leisurely stroll and a picnic in the sunshine. If a day trip sounds like a good idea, we recommend heading south to Hasselt for its tranquil Japanese garden and Jenever museum – be sure to pick up a bottle of the tipple on your way out.
